It was a proud moment for Tamil film industry as hard-hitting and thought provoking film Visaranai was on Thursday announced as India’s official entry to the 2017 Academy Awards. It was selected by the jury at the Film Federation of India from the 29 other films, which were in the race to represent India at the Oscars.
The film is based on real life incidents involving four young immigrants who fall prey to corruption, custodial violence and their unspeakable sufferings at the hands of the police officers. The last time a Tamil movie was selected for the Oscars was Hey Ram in 2000.
Part of the film is based on true events recorded in the novel ‘Lock Up’, written by M. Chandrakumar, an auto driver from Coimbatore. Dhanush said it was a proud and joyous moment for his production house and director Vetrimaran. He praised the cast and crew of the film as ‘fantastic.’
Mr. Vetrimaran told that he was extremely happy and the news was a pleasant surprise. “The movie continues to be very relevant. We are now preparing for the next step, and hope the film will earn a nomination,” he said. The film’s chances will be known in January 2017.
Visaranai which starred Dinesh Ravi, Samuthirakani, Kishore, Ajay Ghosh, Anandhi and ‘Aadukalam’ Murugadoss, premiered at the Venice International Film festival in 2015 and had a theatrical release in February 2016.
