Reliance Jio, Paytm Apologise For Using PM Modi’s Image Without Permission

The government has issued notices on Reliance Jio Infocomm and Paytm for using the prime minister's photograph in their advertisements.

Reliance Jio, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, and Paytm, founded by Vijay Shekhar Sharma, have apologised for using photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in ads without the government’s permission.

Both companies had been sent notices asking them to explain why they ignored guidelines that prohibit employing the PM’s name and picture for commercial gain.

A written warning was sent by Consumer Affairs Ministry which stated that penalties could apply.

In September last year, Reliance Jio, the youngest telecom in the country, had through its ads, dedicated  its 4G service to the Modi government’s flagship Digital India project. Full-page “Reliance Jio: Digital Life” advertisements were published with a photograph of Mr Modi.

Then, in November, when the PM abruptly announced the cancellation of high-denomination notes, Paytm ran similar ads welcoming the move which led to an immediate surge in digital wallets like the one that Paytm and smaller players like MobiKwik provide.
